Yellow Zone
- Take immediate action to get your asthma under control Peak flow   to  
 Early Warning Signs  Quick Relief medication to take:
 Albuterol
(aka. Proventil, Ventolin, Maxair)

4.  Shortness of Breath
5.  Unable to sleep at night

1.  Take 2 puffs and recheck peak flow in 20 minutes. If no improvement, take 2 more puffs and recheck peak flow in 20 minutes.
2.  If no improvement, take 2 more puffs and recheck peak flow in 20 minutes.
3.  Call our office or "after hours" emergency number if no improvement at this point.
4.  Continue Albuterol every 4 hours if symptoms continue and peak flows are responding and you remain comfortable.
5.  Call if symptoms are not responding or peak flow readings drop back to yellow zone well before the next dose of albuterol is scheduled.
6.  Call if you require your albuterol more than every four hours
7.  Consider temporarily increasing the dose of your inhaled steroid (Flovent, Pulmicort, Qvar) for the duration of your exacerbation - about 1 week usually.
 
Red Zone - This is an Emergency - Take these actions          Peak Flow   to  
 Late Warning Signs  Quick Relief medications to take:
 Albuterol (aka. Proventil, Ventolin, Maxair)
  • A lot of difficulty breathing
  • Trouble talking or walking
  • Constant Coughing
  • Using neek and stomach muscles to breathe
  • Ribs show when breathing
  • "Quick Relief" medications don't help
  • Lips or nails are blue
1.  2 puffs and recheck peak flow in 5 minutes.
2.  If no improvement, take 2 more puffs and recheck peak flow in 5 minutes.
3.  If no improvement (you are still in red zone), call our office or "after hours" emergency number (314-868-7700) or go to the nearest emergency room or call 911 for immediate help.
4.  if your peak flow is over  and you feel better, you are now in the yellow zone. Follow the instructions above for the Yellow Zone.
